Wellington region

Gateway to the South Island and home to our government, Wellington boasts some of the best gardens and cafes and nightlife. Wellington city is set around the edge of a large harbour which opens out to the Cook Strait sea and is the southern port for which all ferries leave to travel to the northern tip of the South island and into the port of Picton. Wellington is quite different to other New Zealand cities in that it is surrounded by rolling hills. Wellington is also home to most national theatre, dance and perfomance companies, as well as the national museum, Te Papa, archives and library. As a result there's something on almost every night in Wellington.
